The Empowerment Center seeks to enrich participants’ intellectual and emotional lives by offering educational opportunities and experiential activities that stimulate thoughtfulness and creativity.
Community Meeting is our only group that meets every day and is a tradition that the Center adopted as part of our commitment to practicing the Sanctuary model of trauma-informed care at Y-HEP. In a world where we are often looked at but rarely seen, often listened-to but rarely heard, this daily practice grants each individual a chance for meaningful visibility. We believe that this strengthens us both as individuals and as a community.
Other Educational Groups: The daily group schedule includes a wide range of options, such as workforce development and life skills classes, art therapy, an LGBTQ spirituality group, music exercises, SELF group (a trauma-informed therapeutic group model) and various types of support groups and open discussion groups. Our programming is always evolving, and we are increasing our collaborative efforts with local professionals and partner organizations in planning group curriculum.
Current and past examples of group offerings include:
- Creative writing
- Queer women’s support group
- Transgender support group
- Sexual Health
- Wellness classes
- Parenting classes
- Spoken word poetry/Free-styling
